Ready to give that textbook a rest and get out in the field? Hands-on learning is key at New College. So go see the world and expand your knowledge beyond the classroom. Through student-led research, professional internships, study abroad opportunities and community engagement, you can experience firsthand what it’s like to take what you’ve learned and apply it to the real world—all before you graduate.

Sharpen Your Sense of Adventure.

Imagine yourself tagging shark species in Sarasota Bay, conducting research in a lab on how the body fights cancer, or collaborating with a global team to define the future of urban spaces. Our students just go for it, with the encouragement of professors like Liz Leininger! Marena Long, a fourth-year Marine Biology student, says, “I’ve had amazing opportunities at New College—from studying corals in Honduras to fishing in Sarasota Bay. The faculty work closely with students to ensure that we get the most out of our classes to help in our future endeavors.”

Apply Classroom Learning to Real Life.

Through student-led research, professional internships, study abroad opportunities and community engagement, you can experience firsthand what it’s like to take what you’ve learned and apply it to the real world—all before you graduate. Student Joshua Ingram has interned at NASA, while other Novos have scored internships locally and internationally at:
• The U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia
• The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C.
• Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida
• Marine Dynamics Academy in Gansbaai, South Africa

Trot the Globe.

Our students explore opportunities far beyond Sarasota—from analyzing phytoplankton on the Antarctic coast to working with South African refugee camps. Through EcoLeague, you can experience a different ecosystem with one of our colleague schools that are national leaders in environmental and sustainability issues. And because we’re part of the National Student Exchange, you can study in 175 participating campuses across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands (for the same cost as your New College tuition).

From Learning to Leading.

Thanks to their experiential learning background at New College, our alumni are changing the game.

“I think New College really helped me foster this idea of constantly learning and engaging, and not being afraid to try new things (even if I won’t do as well as I think I will). Because of my experience at New College, I just really encourage students now to pursue interdisciplinary education in that way.”

–Giulia Heyward ’14, renowned journalist and fellow with The New York Times

“The independent learning and critical thinking that was integrated into so many of the courses I took at New College have been immensely helpful. Being independent while still being able to seek advice and communicate your ideas to others is a major theme in scientific research, and I think New College was uniquely poised to prepare me for that.”
